What do you need to get started?

To get started, you'll need an adequate stash of reusable nappies. Here are some factors to consider:

a. Quantity: As a newborn, babies require frequent nappy changes. Aim for 25-30 nappies to ensure you have enough to last between washes.

b. Sizing: Look for nappies specifically designed for newborns or adjustable ones that can grow with your baby.

c. Accessories: In addition to the nappies, consider investing in reusable wipes, a wet bag for storing soiled nappies on the go, and liners for easy waste disposal.

Before using your nappies

Pre-washing:

Before using brand new reusable nappies for the first time, make sure to do a pre-wash to remove oils from production process. Most nappies will also require washing several times before use to enhance absorbency.

Make sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Prepping Inserts:

Depending on the type of nappy you choose, they may need some preparation before you can put them on the baby. If you are using pocket nappies, they will need "stuffing" with the appropriate insert/booster before use.

Fitting and Changing a Cloth Nappy

Fastening

You can practice on a teddy bear or doll. Make sure you know how to securely fasten the nappies using snaps, Velcro, or pins, depending on the style you choose.

Washing and Care

Maintaining a proper washing routine is crucial to keep your reusable nappies clean and hygienic.

a. Wet and Dry Pailing: Store dirty nappies in a wet bag or a dry pail until wash day. Pre-rinsing soiled nappies can help prevent stains and odors.

b. Washing Routine: If you have purchased new nappies, we recommend that you follow the manufacturer's washing instructions. The following tips:

i. Wash every 2-3 days to prevent odors and staining.

ii. Use a gentle detergent free from enzymes, brighteners, and fabric softeners.

iii. Wash nappies at a temperature suitable for the fabric and follow any specific care instructions.

c. Drying: Line drying is the most environmentally friendly option, but if using a dryer, choose a low heat setting to prolong the lifespan of your nappies.

Troubleshooting and Support:

Don't be discouraged if you encounter any issues along the way. Remember that it takes time to find the perfect fit and absorbency for your baby. Seek support from experienced cloth diapering communities, parenting forums, or local cloth diapering groups to troubleshoot common problems and gain valuable advice.
